Western Elementary School PTO

February 21, 2018 Meeting Minutes

 

2017-2018 Officers:  Janet Kuzma, President; Andrea Biondo, Vice President; Amanda Jagello, Treasurer; Meg Pinto, Secretary

 

In Attendance: Justina Miller, Jodi Luchina, Danielle Scanlon, Amanda Linsley, Amanda Coles, Amy Dorsey, Jason Sagliano, Lauren Sagliano, Anshu Nanda, Christine Okoski, Dawn LaFlamme

 

Meeting called to order 7:06 pm

 

Pledge of Allegiance

 

Minutes - The January 2018 minutes were reviewed by all present.  Lauren Sagliano motioned to accept, Amy Dorsey seconded. Minutes were accepted. 

 

Treasurer's Report - The January 2018 Treasury Report was submitted and discussed.   

 

Old Business

 

Spirit Sticks - Chairpersons:  Amanda Jagello & Andrea Biondo.  Ordered 100 St. Patrick's Day and 200 Easter.  Order forms will be out by March 1st.  Students will receive a free Earth Day spirit stick in April.  Need to decide on ordering spirit sticks for upcoming events.

 

Indoor Recess Games / Amazon - Chairperson:  Amanda Jagello.  All 15 classrooms participated.  The PTO received many thank you notes.

 

PSC -The Community Showcase will be held on February 24th.  Amy Dorsey will run the Western table.  Janet will send out information about the Western student raffle prize basket and school with most student attendance will receive a grant for an assembly.  Discussed selling spirit sticks at the table.  Western is hosting the Foley Award dinner at the Crystal Room on May 8th.  The money raised goes toward PSC scholarships.  Foley Award recipient nominations due soon.  Next PSC meeting is March 26th.

 

Scholastic Book Fair - Chairpersons:  Danielle Scanlon & Amy Dorsey.  April 24th, 25th, 26th.  Need a volunteer list.  Per Amy, the book check out volunteers will help.  There are plenty of left over books for the free book table.

 

Box Tops - Chairperson:  Gretchen Scully.  Not in attendance.  Next submission is March 1st.  Decided not to use classroom parents for this collection.

 

Braided Pastry - Chairperson:  Andrea Biondo.  Delivery March 20th.  Janet will reach out for volunteers on Facebook.

 

Artwork Fundraiser - Chairperson:  Jen Hawks.  Not in attendance.  Fundraiser will take place in Fall 2018.  Jen is coordinating with the art teacher, Mrs. Corra. 

 

Coca-Cola Points - Chairperson:  Lauren Sagliano.  Lauren will work on sending a flyer home.  Discussed setting up collection jars in school.

 

4th Grade Yearbook - Chairperson:  Gretchen Scully.  Not in attendance.  Working with vendor.

4th Grade Fun Day - Chairpersons:  Amy Dorsey & Tina Miller.  Amy and Tina volunteered to chair.

 

Cupcake Wars - Chairpersons:  Janet Kuzma & Tina Miller.  February 26th.  38 entries.  Volunteer judges from Stonehouse Bakery, Cakes by Sarah, Brenda Smith from Brenda's Cupcakes, Kate Murphy from Food Services, and many more.  Is not a nut free event.

 

Field Trips - 3rd and 4th grade trips have been scheduled.

 

Restaurant Night - Chairperson: Anshu Nanda.  Pepe's Waterbury said Tuesdays are the best night and they will send coupons that need to be redeemed in order for the PTO to receive 15%.  The fundraiser will take place the entire day, take out and dine in orders will qualify with coupon.  Will talk to Mrs. Goodrich to pick a date.

 

Yankee Candle - Chairperson:  Amy Dorsey.  Sale starts March 8th.  Pick up is April 30th

 

New Business

 

Father Daughter Dance - Chairpersons:  Janet Kuzma & Danielle Scanlon.  April 6th.  Need a DJ and theme ideas.  Discussed photos; possibly have a selfie station.  Christine Okoski volunteered to inquire about a DJ and unicorns/rainbows were discussed for a theme.

 

Mother Son Event - Chairpersons:  Meg Pinto & Amanda Coles.  May 11th.  Detective theme.  Volunteers will be needed.  Danielle Scanlon will speak with police department to have an officer come to event.

 

Muffins with Moms / Donuts with Dads - Chairpersons:  Gretchen Scully & Jen Hawks.  Not in attendance.  Dates are needed.

 

All School Field Trip - Discussed ideas.  Agreed on trying to plan for next year.

 

Playground Fundraiser - Chairpersons: Janet Kuzma & Meg Pinto.  Mrs. Goodrich working on updating the playground area and requested funding for a new piece of playground equipment.  Approximate cost $5200.  Discussed having a separate fundraiser to offset the cost.  Ideas discussed:  slime the principal, coin war, car wash.

 

School Safety Measures - Discussed recent concerns regarding school safety and possibly holding a parent informational night.  Danielle Scanlon will speak with police department to see if someone can attend.

 

Staff Appreciation Luncheon - Chairperson:  Janet Kuzma.  Week of May 7th.

 

Administrative Professionals Day - April 25th.  Dawn LaFlamme volunteered to purchase Mrs. Butkus' gifts.

 

Principal's Report

  • Family & Community Engagement Committee

ü  Collecting 100 pennies for Western Wishes.  $150 was collected.

ü  Dr. Seuss Day - Various activities planned.

  • School Culture Committee

ü  2nd Bee Assembly February 23rd.

ü  Spirit Silly Sock Day February 28th.

  • Survey Committee

ü  Organizing the 2nd career share for Friday, March 9th.  Looking for adults to share their careers.  Amy Dorsey volunteered to check in volunteers.

  • Data Committee

ü  Monitoring data (attendance, behavior referrals, bees) while creating school wide action steps to support student success.

  • MAP NWEA mid-year testing is complete and data was sent home.
  • Western continues to practice safety codes each month. This month Code Orange.
  • Kindergarten Registration March 5th - 9th. If you know of any children who will be joining the Western Family, let them know about registration. A letter will be going home to families soon.
  • Junior Achievement Day April 12th Breakfast funding $130 in budget.
