November 15, 2017 Meeting Minutes


2017-2018 Officers:  Janet Kuzma, President; Andrea Biondo, Vice President;

Amanda Jagello, Treasurer; Meg Pinto, Secretary


In Attendance: Brenda Goodrich, Allison McGrath, Christine Peck, Justina Miller, Christine Okoski, Amanda Linsley, Anshu Nanda, Amy Dorsey, Debra Goodman, Gretchen Scully


Meeting called to order 7:03 pm


Pledge of Allegiance


President's welcome.


Minutes - The October 2017 minutes were reviewed by all present.  Allison McGrath motioned to accept, Amy Dorsey seconded. Minutes were accepted. 


Treasurer's Report - The October 2017 Treasury Report was submitted and discussed.  Mrs. Goodrich notified the PTO that Scholastic Dollars cannot be used to purchase the Science Spin magazine which was approved at the October meeting and asked if we can use PTO funds to purchase it.  A vote was approved to use PTO funds to purchase the magazine up to $300.  Chrissy Okoski motioned and Allison McGrath seconded.  


Old Business


Spirit Sticks - Chairpersons:  Amanda Jagello & Andrea Biondo.  Ordered 300 elf phrases, 100 Santa and 100 S"elf"ie sticks for the December holiday sale. 


PSC - Added meeting on January 22nd at 6:30pm at BOE.  All are welcome.  The Community Showcase will be held on February 24th.  Looking for schools to donate raffle baskets.  Western is hosting the Foley Award dinner in the spring.  Discussed the Trunk or Treat.  Discussed having a Graduation walk.  Discussed fundraiser ideas: Mom Prom, Trivia Night, Fall Ball.


Mixed Bag Designs Fundraiser - Chairpersons:  Meg Pinto & Jodi Luchina.  Fundraiser did very well.  Decided to have it again in Fall 2018.  Chairperson incentive Mixed Bag gift cards will be used to purchase items for other events or for raffle prizes.  Online sales continue through December.


Scholastic Book Fair Spring 2018 - Chairperson:  Danielle Scanlon possibly.  Amy Dorsey volunteered to co-chair.  May want to try Barnes & Noble.  It was mentioned that the students love the buy one get one deal from the Scholastic Spring book fair. 


Box Tops - Chairperson:  Gretchen Scully.  Went well.  Mrs. Piscitelli's class won the contest.  Pizza Party is on Tuesday, November 21st.  Next submission is in March.


Lyman Orchard Pies - Chairpersons:  Andrea Biondo & Amanda Jagello.  Delivery is Tuesday, November 21st.  6 volunteers are needed for delivery.


Turkey Trot - Chairperson:  Janet Kuzma.  Afternoon November 21st; Rain date November 22nd.  Discussed turkey and feather ideas.  Mrs. Goodrich approved extra recess as the prize.


Wreaths - Chairperson:  Andrea Biondo. 


Playground - Justina Miller notified that her husband Kurt has finished fixing the second basketball hoop and will need help putting it back up.


Holiday Event - Chairperson:  Chrissy Okoski. 

Pictures with Santa - December 8th.  Students will also make cards for senior citizens.

Gingerbread Literacy Night - December 14th.  Cafeteria will start collected milk cartons.  Will set up dates for assembling houses.  Mrs. Masliuk will plan the literacy part of the night.  Janet will reach out for volunteers.


Artwork Fundraiser - Chairperson:  Jen Hawks.  Not in attendance.


Coca-Cola Points - Chairperson:  Lauren Sagliano.  Not in attendance.


New Business


4th Grade Fun Day - Need chairperson.  In the past, purchase pizza, water, plates etc.  Students eat outside.


4th Grade Yearbook - Need chairperson.  Company where yearbooks were made last year have contacted Mrs. Goodrich.  Janet Kuzma will provide the students' school pictures.


Restaurant Night - Discussed ideas.  Anshu Nanda volunteered to call Rita's and Pepe's.


Paint Fundraiser - Discussed going to Brushstroke or having a wood painting person come to the school.


Cupcake Wars - Chairperson:  Janet Kuzma.  Possibly take place in February again.


New Treasurer for 2018-2019 School Year - Nominations may take place in May.


Principal's Report


  • Rainforest Animal Assembly was a huge hit and a wonderful learning experience. Mrs. Quinn's class had a more intimate encounter with the animals.
  • Committee Work Family & Community Engagement Western will be helping the Naugatuck Food Bank for Thanksgiving at St. Michael's Parish Hall November 19th. Parents and students are welcome 9:30-1:00pm.
  • Committee Work School Wide Data - The team is looking for ways to get students in school every day lowering chronic absenteeism.
  • Help needed for pie delivery and pick up November 21st.
  • Help needed for Turkey Trot November 21st.
  • Positive Behavior Supports - First Bee Assembly on November 30th. A top bee winner and runner up from each class will be acknowledged. Each Special area will acknowledge one student per special area for the Western Pride Award. Students of the Month will also be acknowledged.
  • Kindergarten students are investigating problems and solutions like a scientist, and learning about motion.
  • Ms. Hardwick's 1st grade class wrapped up their first science unit on engineering and technology with a STEM activity.
  • 2nd grade students are beginning to explore matter.
  • 3rd grade student are using the Scientific Method as they create an irrigation system to water plants over the holiday break.
  • 4th grade students are discovering the process that engineers go through when they attempt to solve problems.
  • December 8th - Career Share, Pictures with Santa
  • December 13th - Smile Builders
  • December 14th - Gingerbread Literacy Night
  • December 15th - Report Cards
  • December 19th - Sing a Long during school hours
  • December 20th - Pajama Day
  • Chess Club - Discussed second round.
  • Western 4th grader won the Bus Safety Poster Contest.
