October 11, 2017 Meeting Minutes

Meeting called to order 7:02 pm

Pledge of Allegiance

President's welcome and introduction of board members.

Minutes - The September 2017 minutes were reviewed by all present. Allison McGrath motioned to accept, Lauren Sagliano seconded. Minutes were accepted.

Treasurer's Report - The September 2017 Treasury Report was submitted. The 2017-2018 budget was discussed.

Old Business

Spirit Sticks - Chairpersons: Amanda Jagello & Andrea Biondo. Ordering holiday theme for next sale. Free spirit sticks will be distributed to students for Veteran's Day.

PSC - Next meeting is being held October 23th at 6:30pm at BOE. All are welcome. Western is hosting the Foley Award dinner in the spring. You must attend 2 out of the 4 PSC meetings to qualify to vote for the Foley Award recipient. Trunk or Treat October 27th. Discussed admission will be $5 per family or a bag of candy. Looking for people to decorate trunks and volunteer. Asked for support of additional parent conference in December at BOE meeting on October 12th at 7pm. Still discussing 501c3 umbrella insurance plan.

Mixed Bag Designs Fundraiser - Chairpersons: Meg Pinto & Jodi Luchina. Fundraiser did very well. Approximate profit $4,100. Possible pick up day of Monday, October 23rd. Online sales will continue through December.

Scholastic Book Fair - Chairperson: Danielle Scanlon. October 18th, 19th, and 20th. Still need volunteers for Friday the 20th in the afternoon.

Box Tops - Chairperson: Gretchen Scully. Started the contest this week and will run through October 23rd. Class to collect the most wins a pizza party. Amy Dorsey volunteered to be the parent for Mrs. Makarewicz's class.

Lyman Orchard Pies - Chairpersons: Andrea Biondo & Amanda Jagello. Order forms due this Friday, October 13th. Delivery is Tuesday, November 21st. Volunteers are needed for delivery.

Turkey Trot - Need a chairperson. November 21st; same day as pie pick up. Rain date November 22nd.

Wreaths - Chairperson: Andrea Biondo. Andrea let the vendor know we are interested again this year.

Playground - Mrs. Goodrich will touch base with the high school regarding having students paint or make pavement stencils. Thank you to parents Andy Luchina and Kurt Miller for fixing and painting the basketball hoops!

Holiday Event - Chairperson: Chrissy Okoski. Will do gingerbread house decorating and literacy. Will need volunteers and especially for clean-up. Will need a Santa volunteer. Janet will look for the flyer from last year.

Hurricane Harvey - Janet Kuzma. We raised over $500 used to purchase $25 gift cards. Students made cards and everything was sent to Hailey Elementary School in the Woodlands, TX. A school committee is going to collect money to send to Puerto Rico for hurricane relief.

Custodian Appreciation - Amanda Jagello got the gift cards and Mr. Bill and Mr. Mike were very appreciative.

New Business

Rock Painting - Meg Pinto, Janet Kuzma, Annette Mauro. Discussed idea for #NaugatuckRocks rock painting night and possible hiding options at the school, in the community or for students having a hard day or a rock garden. The rocks are to be inspirational and spread joy.

Coca-Cola Points - Lauren Sagliano. Coca-Cola Give Program. Reward codes are located on bottle caps and are entered online worth $.05-$.38 each. Money is sent to the school a couple times a year. Lauren will make a flyer.

Artwork - Chairperson: Jennifer Hawks. Jennifer decided on the same company we used the last time. Mrs. Goodrich definitely wants to collaborate with the Art teacher. Discussed making sure the art is personal and colorful, ex: handprint. Discussed different times to have the sale; ex. Valentine's, Mother's/Father's Day. The process takes 2-3 months.

Scholastic Dollars - Janet suggested purchasing a new rug for the Library classroom with our Scholastic Dollars. Mrs. Goodrich is opposed since we cannot purchase a rug for every classroom.

A vote was held and approved for Mrs. Masliuk for purchase Science Spin Magazine with Scholastic Dollars.

Principal's Report

• Positive behavior supports - Three September bee winners were picked in each class.
• Go BLUE Against Bullying - Acts of Kindness with a high school volunteer.
• Go Orange for No Child Go Hungry. Collecting canned food for families in need to be donated to the Naugatuck Food Bank.
• Parent Conferences and Book Fair October 18th - 20th. 1:00pm dismissal and mini informational sessions for the upcoming report card distribution.
• Office Tavares retired and we will be welcoming Officer Robinson.
• Rainforest Animal assembly October 30th. Insurance paperwork needed.
• Big Y donated the 14 large pumpkins for the team building classroom pumpkin decorating contest. Students will vote for their favorite and enter a raffle to win the pumpkin.
• Fire prevention visit from Fire Department on October 25th.
• Career Share - TBD Will need parent volunteers to discuss their career with classes.
• Western Spirit Day October 30th.
• Practiced Codes so far this year: Yellow - protect in place, Fire Drill. Next is Code Purple.
• Hopes: Science Spin Magazine and updates to the play scape.
• Chrome Books - Library now has a cart and Mr. Del Signore and Mrs. Masliuk will be ordering a cart to share.
• 1st grade made and ate their own pickles.
• Girls on the Run now held at Western and YMCA Kids on the Move.
• Mr. Bill and Coach Rick are running a successful Chess Club open for 3rd and 4th graders. Ms. Quinn is also helping. Mrs. Goodrich is very thankful to the volunteers.
