September 6, 2017 Meeting Minutes

 

2017-2018 Officers:  Janet Kuzma, President; Andrea Biondo, Vice President;

Meeting called to order 7:01 pm

 

Pledge of Allegiance

 

President's welcome and introduction of board members.

 

Minutes - The May 2017 minutes were reviewed by all present.  Amanda Jagello motioned to accept, Danielle Scanlon seconded. Minutes were accepted. 

 

Treasurer's Report - The July and August 2017 Treasury Report was submitted.  The 2017-2018 budget was discussed. 

 

Old Business

 

Spirit Sticks - Chairpersons:  Amanda Jagello & Andrea Biondo.  Sales will be reduced to three times during the year with more added if there is a spike in interest.  The first sale will be Halloween time.  A free key ring will be included with first orders.  Free spirit sticks will be distributed to students for Veteran's Day and Earth Day. 

 

PSC - First meeting is being held September 25th at 6:30pm at BOE.  All are welcome.  Western is hosting the Foley Award dinner in the spring.  You must attend 2 out of the 4 PSC meetings to qualify to vote for the Foley Award recipient.

 

Mixed Bag Designs Fundraiser - Chairpersons:  Meg Pinto & Jodi Luchina.  Orders are due September 15th.  Orders should be delivered to school mid-October.  Online sales will continue through December.

 

Scholastic Book Fair - Chairperson:  Danielle Scanlon.  Danielle Scanlon volunteered to be the new chair.  Brooke Flemming is willing to help.  Possible dates during conferences.  October 17th through 20th possibly only 2 days with one night. 

 

Muffins with Mom & Donuts with Dads - Chairpersons:  Gretchen Scully & Jen Hawks.  Large turnout last year.  Issues with parking.  Discussed suggestions to handle the amount of attendees this year.  Possibly split up the grades on different days.

 

Field Day - Ran out of fruit last year.  Need to order more next year.  Students loved the t-shirts provided by the PTO.

Box Tops Coordinator - Chairperson:  Gretchen Scully.  Will set up a parent volunteer from each classroom to collect, cut, and count box tops.  November is the first submission.  Possibly hold a contest again.

 

New Business

 

Lyman Orchard Pies - Chairpersons:  Andrea Biondo & Amanda Jagello.  Order forms go out September 29th, need to be returned October 13th.  Delivery is Tuesday, November 21st.  Volunteers will be needed.

 

Artwork - Chairperson:  Jennifer Hawks.  Possibly for Mother's/Father's Day.  Collaborate with Art teacher.

 

Wreaths - Will sell again this year with the same vendor.  We receive 50% profit. 

 

Turkey Trot - Want to hold it again this year.  Discussed different feather ideas.  Possibly the same day as pie pick up.

 

Butterbraids - Chairperson:  Andrea Biondo.  Discussed possible times of the year to sell and which items to offer. 

 

Pavement Stencils - Mrs. Goodrich is trying to have the Naugatuck High School art students paint four square, hop scotch, etc.  Discussed having a smaller hop scotch.  There may be stencils in the district will discuss at the PSC meeting.

 

New Basketball Hoops - Discussed the need for new basketball hoops/backboards.  We could possibly paint backboards and get new rims and nets.  New backboards are approximately $800 each online.  There is money in the budget set aside for the playground.  Mrs. Goodrich purchased surveillance signs for the blacktop/playground area to deter people from damaging any property.

 

Custodian Appreciation Day - October 2nd.  Need to purchase two $50 gift cards and greeting cards for Mr. Mike and Mr. Bill. 

 

Gingerbread/Cookies with Santa Night - Chairperson:  Chrissy Okoski.  Chrissy Okoski volunteered to chair the event.  We discussed new activity ideas.  Wreath pick up may possibly be the same day like last year.  Decorate cookies (may conflict with American Legion event), make ornaments or picture frames for holiday pictures taken by Janet Kuzma Photography.  One reason less families took pictures last year from the previous year was the kids were dirty from decorating the gingerbread houses.

 

Family Fun Nights - School Planned:  Movie Night - September 22nd, Safety Night - October 5th , Book Bingo - October 27th Math Night - TBD.

Future Ideas:  Father Daughter Dance,  Mother son event, Science night, Family game night, Cupcake Wars, Restaurant Night, Paint Night.

 

Hurricane Harvey - Janet looked into adopting a classroom through an organization but they were already overwhelmed with volunteers.  Janet's friend's daughter's school in Texas is in need of gift cards.  We will have a change drive where students can put their change in the wishing well.  Larger donations will be turned into the office.  We will bring change to Ion Bank to count and purchase gift cards for the school.

 

School Banner - Discussed purchasing this year.

 

Plant Sale - Chairperson:  Amanda Jagello.  Planned for May 11th.

 

Principal's Report

 

  • Thank you to the PTO for the Meet & Greet held before school started. Good turn out.
  • Western welcomes Dante Coviello - K teacher, Vanessa Ferguson - 1st grade teacher, Laura Sergi - Interventionist, Taylor Story - Interventionist, Taylor DeVico - Building Substitute, Trish McCarthy - Speech/Language Pathologist, and Cara Brennan - Psychologist.
  • Working on positive behavior supports / common language for all / classroom visits. Working on routines, procedures, rapport building activities.
  • Hiring for the school store 4th graders and flag team 3rd graders. Applications due September 11th. Interviews to follow.
  • Chess Club open for 3rd and 4th graders Free 2 times per week for 6 weeks with Mr. Bill.
  • Picture Day September 18th Janet Kuzma Photography.
  • Open House September 13th 1:00pm dismissal.
  • Movie Night September 22nd 7:00pm Free in gym. Mrs. Goodrich asked if PTO can purchase popcorn, water, cups etc. Shavone Ely motioned to vote, Jessica Morning seconded. Vote approved to spend up to $100.
  • Universal screening has begun.
  • Continuing the monthly parent shout out.
  • Big Y hopefully donating 14 large pumpkins for the team building classroom pumpkin decorating contest. Students will vote for their favorite and enter a raffle to win the pumpkin.
  • Pavement looks great.
  • Working on getting Chrome Books for each kindergarten student. Chrome books are 1:1 ratio for the rest of the grades.
  • Fire drill went fairly well. Made note of improvements to be made.
