Meeting Minutes

January 11, 2017

2016-2017 Officers:  Janet Kuzma, President; Andrea Biondo, Vice President (not present);

Amanda Jagello, Treasurer; Meg Pinto, Secretary

Attendance: Principal Brenda Goodrich, Abby Cervone, Dorothy Paiva, Allison McGrath,

Amanda Coles, Amy Dorsey, Jodi Luchina, Julia Casso, Mike Luchene

Meeting called to order 7:05 pm

President's welcome

Pledge of Allegiance

Secretary's Report - Amanda Jagello motioned to accept November minutes, Allison

McGrath seconded. Minutes were accepted.

Treasurer's Report - The November and December 2016 Treasury Report was submitted.

 Account activity discussed. We are a little under budget.

Old Business -

1. Spirit Sticks - Chairpersons: Amanda Jagello & Andrea Biondo. Do not have complete

financial information because Mrs. Biondo is not present. The January order form went

home today. We have sticks for February. Agreed to take the month of March off from

selling.

2. Turkey Trot - Raised $1,324.25. The kids enjoyed it although some stated it was

difficult. Mr. Luchene's students loved it. Suggested have a larger route and to add

jumping jacks in between laps. Also suggested prepackaging feathers or using paper

feathers next year and to hold it earlier in November for a better chance the weather will

be warmer.

3. Gingerbread Literacy Night - Chairpersons: Julia Casso & Deb Masliuk. Mrs. Masliuk

asked if the PTO can take over the event next year. She will still coordinate the literacy

portion. Photo sales were down from last year. Discussed ways to change the timing of

the activities to improve the photo sales next year.

4. Box Tops - Coordinator: Jennifer Jackson. Next collection needs to be completed by

February 14th. Agreed to have another pizza party contest and try to have pizza

donated. This is Mrs. Jackson's last year at Western. Discussed having a new volunteer

work with Jen to learn how to submit the Box Tops. More sheets will be distributed and

Mrs. Kuzma will follow up with classroom parent volunteers.

5. 4 th Grade Appreciation - Chairperson: Dorothy Paiva. Mrs. Paiva is in the process of

getting approval for a college student to receive credits for putting the yearbook together

and asking the college to print the yearbooks as a donation.

6. Wreath Sale - Chairperson: Andrea Biondo. Raised a profit of $648.70. The delivery

went smoothly and Andrea did a great job!

7. PSC - Community Showcase is February 11 th 10am-1pm at Naugatuck High School

gym. Discussed if Western should have a table set up. Would need volunteers. Hillside

and Andrew Avenue had tables last year. We donated $25 toward a raffle prize. Last

year, the school with the most attendees won money to use toward assemblies. Not

sure if they may do that this year. Foley Award nominees being accepted. Must be

someone from the community, 18 or older, who volunteers.

 

New Business -

1. Cupcake Wars - Chairperson: Janet Kuzma. Tentative date Monday February 27 th .

Kids will make and decorate cupcakes on the weekend. On Monday, guest judges will

judge the cupcakes and that night awards will be announced and the cupcakes will be

sold. Nut allergies are a concern. Will add on the flyer that cupcakes may contain nuts.

Volunteers will be needed. Can ask Mayor Hess and local bakeries to be judges.

2. Mother Son Event Scavenger Hunt - Chairpersons: Amanda Coles & Meg Pinto.

Tentative date in May. Pirate theme. Boys can make pirate crafts to wear and have a

treasure hunt. Will be held outside and have a rain date. The budget can be discussed

at the next meeting.

3. Yankee Candle Fundraiser - Chairperson: Amy Dorsey. Sale is March 16-30. Possible

ice cream party incentive for the class that sells the most. Delivery and pick up day May

8 th use the cafeteria for distribution and volunteers needed. Animal assembly is

scheduled the same day.

4. Donuts with Dad & Muffins with Mom - Chairpersons: Gretchen Scully & Jen Hawks.

The events will occur in the next couple of months. Chairpersons not present. Possibly

sell donut and muffin spirit sticks.

5. Father Daughter Dance - Chairpersons: Janet Kuzma & Danielle Scanlon. Tentative

date April 21 st 6:30pm-8:00pm. Volunteers are needed. Looking for theme ideas.

Budget is $375. Will ask Tyler to DJ again.

6. Scholastic Book Fair - Chairperson: Brooke Flemming. Tentative dates April 3-7. Buy

One Get One sale. Mrs. Goodrich mentioned Smarter Balance testing taking place that

week. Possibly have sale only two days Wednesday and Thursday 9am-12pm during

regular library checkout times. Friday can be a make up day. Should still have the

donated books for students. We will receive double scholastic points. Mrs. Goodrich

asked to move the fair to the last week in March or on parent conference days.

7. Plant Sale - Chairperson: Amanda Jagello. May 12 th . Need volunteers.

8. Future Fundraising Ideas - Should we continue with the fall Cherrydale fundraiser?

Butter Braids? School Cookbook with a culture diversity night can bring in dishes and

buy cookbooks? Another restaurant night?

9. Staff Appreciation Luncheon - May. Order from Damelio's and have cookies.

10. Administrative Appreciation Day - April. Allison McGrath will purchase gifts for

secretary.

11. Earth Day - April 22 nd . Purchase gloves.

12. Field Day - May 26 th Rain Date June 2 nd . T-shirts would be ordered from Roseblatt's.

Would like to have a contest to have a 4 th grader's art on t-shirts. Stick with school

colors maroon, gray, yellow.

13. Classrooms Games - Order through Amazon Prime each classroom can spend up to

$50 must include tax. Teachers can pick out what they'd like on Amazon Prime and print

out the shopping cart.

14. Junior Achievement Breakfast - April 18 th .

15. Teacher Appreciation - May 5 th .

16. Gingerbread purchases went over budget. Allison McGrath motioned to approve the

purchases, Amy Dorsey seconded the motion.

Principal's Report -

Committee Work / Family & Community Engagement - Currently collecting items for

veterans.

School Culture Committee - Recently organized Majestic Monday.

Survey Committee - Organized 2 career share events so far. The next share is Friday,

March 24 th . In addition to adults willing to share their occupations, someone is needed to

check in volunteers. Amy Dorsey volunteered.

MAP NWEA testing is currently taking place. This math and reading testing takes place

three times per year.

Math Night Friday January 13 th at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. This is a free event.

Pajama Day Friday January 20 th . This is a free event.

Author Daryl Cobb visits Western Monday January 23 rd . Western is having a competition to

determine with which class he will have lunch. Book orders are due January 12 th .

Exercise Club with Mrs. Goodrich starts this month twice a week for interested 4 th graders.

Western Spirit Wear - Shirts, Polo, Hats, Bags, Fleece available in the office for staff,

parents and students. The Next Spirit Day is Wednesday, November 23 rd .
