Meeting Minutes
November 9, 2016

Secretary's Report - Allison McGrath motioned to accept October minutes, Abby Cervone seconded. Minutes were accepted.

Treasurer's Report - The October 2016 treasurer's report was submitted. Account activity discussed. Mrs. Jagello explained that the Central Treasury balance is not correct.

Old Business -

Cherrydale Fundraiser - Chairpersons: Catherine Deitelbaum & Polly Grant.
Orders were received directly at homes.

Spirit Sticks - Chairpersons: Amanda Jagello & Andrea Biondo. Ordered more for December (holiday), January (Pokemon and My Little Pony) and February (Emoji). Mrs. Goodrich stated kids are still excited and asked to please keep an order form in her mailbox.

Lyman Orchard Pies - Chairpersons: Amanda Jagello & Andrea Biondo. Do not need more than six volunteers including chairpersons. Still need sleeping bags or tarps to keep pies cool. Delivery and pick up November 21st dismissal until 6pm. Sold 450 pies $3,177 profit, over budget of $2,500 but under last year's profit of $3,600.

Scholastic Book Fair - Chairperson: Brooke Flemming. Went well. The students loved the gently used books. Sales were $3126.54 with a profit of $1563.27. We have a total of $4675.29 in Scholastic Dollars. No scholastic dollars are about to expire. Mrs. Goodrich has a catalog. Can use what's left over after Scholastic News is ordered. Ms. Flemming is willing to chair a Spring book fair. She'll pick dates and follow up at the next meeting.

Veteran's Day - Went well. Flags were purchased and handed out at assembly. Might not get flags next year. Mrs. Goodrich is concerned about students not demonstrating proper flag etiquette.

Turkey Trot - Chairperson needed. Will be held outside on November 23rd during school hours early in the day. November 22nd rain date. The proceeds will offset Field Day costs. Students will each have an individual turkey and receive one feather per lap completed. Volunteers needed and small feathers needed. The class with the most feathers and the class that raises the most money will receive a pizza party. Mrs. Goodrich mentioned the blacktop will be repaved in the Spring and would like to have stencils of hop scotch, a map, etc. for the new blacktop.

Holiday Celebration - Chairpersons: Julia Casso & Deb Masliuk. Need an event name. Combining PTO Santa event with gingerbread house making night December 2nd. Need a Santa and a Santa suit. Julia will send a flyer home asking for donations and volunteers. Gingerbread Literacy Night, read a holiday book and then donate it to our library. Mrs. Kuzma will take family pictures. Wreath pick up will take place the same day outside.

Box Tops - Coordinator: Jennifer Jackson. The contest was successful. Mrs. Taylor's class won pizza party with 847 box tops. Submitted over $700. Last year submitted $750 for two submissions. Will have another contest for the March collection. There was some confusion with the collection procedure. Will go over the procedure again with parent volunteers before the March collection.

Wreath Sale - Chairperson: Andrea Biondo. Sold 75 wreaths will bows and 11 without. Pick up December 2nd.

4th Grade Appreciation - Chairperson: Dorothy Paiva. Chrissy Okoski volunteered to help. May have 5 more volunteers. Will create yearbooks and include sponsorship pages for donations from local businesses. Catherine can be contacted for information regarding the yearbooks. Need to communicate with fourth grade teachers. Will need pictures from throughout the year to include.

Restaurant Night - Chairperson: Julia Casso. October 30th American Pie & Pub in Seymour. Raised $268 between meals and raffles. Raffle prizes were donated. Halloween weekend may have kept more families from coming. Julia did a great job!

PSC Meeting - October 24th Community Showcase - To be held at Naugatuck High School gym February 2017. Foley Award to be held at Salem School. Back to School Block Party - Would like to make this event bigger. Calendar of all school fundraisers to avoid overlapping. Next meeting January 11th.

New Business -

December PTO Meeting - Will not be held. Next meeting will be Wednesday, January 11th.

Cupcake Wars - Chairperson: Janet Kuzma. Will take place in February.

Mother Son Event - Scavenger Hunt. Amanda Coles volunteered to co-chair with another person.

Butter Braid Fundraiser - Possible Spring fundraiser.

Principal's Report -

Committee Work Family & Community Engagement - Western will be collecting food for the Naugatuck Food Bank for Thanksgiving. On November 19th, the staff will be volunteering at St. Michael's Parish Hall to fill baskets. The teachers will tell the students what time. Parents and students are welcome. Usually have to a make boxes, separate food, then fill boxes.

Committee Work School Wide Data - The team is working for ways to get students in school every day, lowering chronic absenteeism. The absentee rate has been increasing the past couple of years. Offering extra recess as an incentive for perfect attendance.

Movie Night is 6:30pm November 18th in the gym. All welcome. Bring blankets, pillows, snacks. Voting on movie is underway. The movie will be shown on the new bigger screen.

Pie delivery and pick up is on November 21st and help will be needed.

Turkey Trot will be held November 23rd and there is a 1:00pm dismissal that day.

Western Spirit Wear - Shirts, Polo, Hats, Bags, Fleece available in the office for staff, parents and students. The Next Spirit Day is Wednesday, November 23rd.

Positive Behavior Supports - Prizes are given monthly to students whose names are pulled from each class's beehive. November 28th is Western's first BEE Assembly where a top "bee" winner and runner up will be acknowledged in each class and receive bigger prizes. At the Bee Assembly, each Special Area will acknowledge one student per special area for the Western Pride Award. Students of the Months will also be acknowledged.

Events to come:
Gingerbread Making/Santa Night December 2nd.
Smile Builders teeth cleaning December 9th.
Sing a Long December 19th during school hours. Parents invited.
Possible door decorating contest.

Mrs. Goodrich and Mr. Del Signore are looking for stencils and volunteers to paint math equations on the stair raisers.

The gym is going to be painted.

Math Night - PTO can help.

Field Day T-Shirts - 4th grader design contest.

Donations of gently used Western Spirit Wear would be appreciated.
